A new e-waste company is born in Gauteng
Established in June 2005 in Benoni as an e-waste recycling company
supplying compliant e-waste solutions to the local market. One of the
first recycling companies to focus on e-waste in SA. By the end of 2006,
we were processing around 25 tons of e-waste a month. We had employed
and trained 12 people, 80% of whom were from previously disadvantaged
communities. By June 2006 we were collecting obsolete electronics from
Multinationals in Africa and performing final destruction and separation
at the Benoni site.
First ISO 14001-certified e-waste company in South Africa
Became the first South African company to be ISO 140001 certified for
e-waste. Increased local and African collections and production to 50
tons of a month. Developed the first iteration of our bespoke e-waste
tracking system to track and report the final recycling and disposal
process for our customers. Reported 253% growth in revenue from year one
to year two.
Move to Ballito
Relocated to Ballito in Kwa-Zulu Natal due to the increase in volumes
and to be closer to the port to cut down on our logistics carbon
footprint. Revenue and staff increased consistently during the year and
we processed 100 tons per month for the first time. November 2009 sees
the global markets crash and our Chinese partners decide to disinvest
from the South African market.
Sims RSA created in SA.
We become part of Sims Recycling Solutions, the largest e-waste recycling company in the world. Exposure to the Sims global technology gives us access to the worlds best e-waste practice processes and global offsets for our processed products. First Industry Waste Management licence for e-waste in SA.
As part of our constant drive to supply a global solution locally, we become the first e-waste company in South Africa to be awarded a national HH: Waste Management Licence (WML). Improve our Information Technology Asset Disposal (ITAD) service in-line with global standards, start refurbishing IT equipment and reselling into local rural markets. Production volumes keep increasing, requiring larger factory space.
Bringing digital solutions to rural schools
Our drive to sell refurbished IT equipment proves to be successful and WeCare, our Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme is born. WeCare supplies customised support containers and starts the rural schools IT implementation project. Start to constantly exceed 150 processed tons a month; relocating to a new site becomes an urgent requirement.
Move to new modern facility in Ballito
Moved to our new 1,650 square meters site. Processed volumes exceed 200 tons a month and ITAD Department starts processing more than 1,300 computers a month. Once again, become the first local e-waste company to supply fist world-data security services to South African companies. Establish three WeCare support containers selling refurbished IT equipment supplied by the ITAD Department, creating jobs for 22 people in WeCare. The recycling plant now employees 80 people.
Develop and expand
The next two years were spent expanding our customer base and developing bespoke e-waste systems for the local market. Worked closely with the Department of Environmental Affairs as well as industry to help define the Industry Waste Management Plan for South Africa. Increased volume output of compliantly processed e-waste to more than 350 tons per month, ITAD is constantly processing 2000 assets a month. Employing more than 100 people in Ballito and surrounding areas while setting up rural e-waste collection points.
